Theory Abstract

Asked to create an abstract based on visual narrative and that which is relevant to the topic, I decided to set mine on the following:

  • Changes within cities which includes looking at the Modernism movement.
  • Composition of an image.
  • How the setting and audience of a piece affects the message.
  • Last but not least, how this relates to my own practise and the surreal image "Self" by Setane.
In effect the keywords I will be using to associate and aid me in my research are as follows:
Reflexivity, Audiencing, Structuralism, Capitalism, and Representation.

Visual Narrative and The Ever-Growing Capitalism Within Cities – An Abstract

Visual language is the communication of ideas and messages through imagery. This can vary in form and setting from billboard posters to fine artwork featured in biblical texts. Throughout this essay we will be touching on how emotional triggers, social scenes and the ever-changing environment that we live in all affect and shape how we see and determine visual language today.

Colour, shape and juxtaposition all lead the viewer to look at a piece in a particular way. This guides the viewers’ eyes as what to look at first by creating a hierarchy through use of space and size and presents the emotional connections through use of colour and how they contrast between elements. However, the meaning of an image can be altered by many exterior factors such as technological advances, increased media production, the space in which it resides and the experiences and social concepts which the viewer has experienced and is aware of. (Rose, 2000).

The increase in technological capabilities widens the possibilities that a graphic designer can achieve and the platforms for which their pieces can be displayed upon. The increase in media means design can be broadcast and in turn influence a much wider audience then previously possible; though this brings with it its own responsibilities and challenges.

These responsibilities include ensuring that material is suitable for all, while still being subjective and engaging towards its target audience. It means considering many factors such as where the piece is going to be displayed both in physical and social aspects, as not only does the venue of the piece present a particular audience but also the social behaviour within that space can dictate the audiences level of perception.

In the modern day works of art can be distributed and presented through means of social media. This can further have an affect on how people view art and the value of such in a commercialised world. So, in this day of money and commodity how does this affect the views within visual culture? How does this also affect how people read images and does the artist’s interpretation get lost within this?

This assignment will be examining these topics and how they interrelate with each other. This will be cross-referenced against my own work and that of Linn Setane’s whom creates surreal imagery using pen and ink techniques. In particular the piece of Setane’s that this text shall compare against is that of her self-portrait named “Self” created in 2014. This piece is geometric in way of composition as she has set different portions of her face within separate triangles. The surrealist nature of her work also brings forth many ways to interpret such and so gives a good example to work from. Having found such a piece and those alike through social media, this essay will be examining how this aids and takes away from an artists creation, while also examining the compositional elements and how these are being used to portray the story.
